For some people in southwestern Pasco County, the turmoil roiling the world's credit market is forcing them to put their hopes for an end to a long-running problem on hold. Many customers of the privately run Aloha Utilities were pleased when the state-chartered Florida Governmental Utility Authority brokered a deal under which Aloha would, in effect, be absorbed into Pasco County Utilities. For years customers complained - to the county, the Florida Public Service Commission and pretty much anyone who would listen - about the discolored and smelly "black" drinking water that comes out of their taps. They are confident that the county will fix the problem once it gains operational control over the Aloha system via the FGUA purchase. ...more

Five years ago, while employed as the medical director of Highlands County Sheriff's Office, I was reprimanded for wearing a department-issued shirt into the courthouse. I was told it was "too intimidating." As of that day, I never wore the shirt again (I don't have to intimidate people.) I wonder how much intimidation there is when the elected sheriff taps on your car window and continues even though she was told you have nothing to say to her, and an exchange of words ensues? Is that intimidating? Sheriff Benton implied people are trying to make her look bad. With her recent headlines she is doing an excellent job on her own and without anybody's input. Pasco County commissioners Tuesday will salute two Pasco County soldiers killed in Iraq. The ceremony is at 11:45 a.m. at the West Pasco Government Center, 7530 Little Road. The board will honor, with resolutions, Army Pfc. Patrick Joseph "PJ" Miller, who was from New Port Richey, and Army Sgt. Marcus Mathes, who hailed from Zephyrhills. They died from combat injuries on March 29 and April 28, respectively. The soldiers' names, which have been added to the veterans' memorial at the government center, will be unveiled after the ceremony. VFW Post 10167 of Holiday will present the colors and retired Army Maj. Gen. Richard Griffitts will read the resolutions and present them to family members. The ceremony will conclude with a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps. ...more
