WINTER HAVEN — Megan Wolfe brushed aside the sort of nagging ailments that would sideline most swimmers to post eight top-five finishes, as the Highlands Hurricanes had an impressive showing at the Sunshine State Games at Rowdy Gaines Pool last weekend. The Blue Streak swim team member and state qualifier finished in the top six and earned team points in each of her 10 events, highlighted by first-place finishes in the 50-free (25.32) and 200-back (2:21.97). Wolfe also took second place in the 100-free with a 54.06 and third in the 100-back with a 1:05.75. She also grabbed fourth in the 400 IM (5:12.22) and 100 fly (1:02.97). ...more

SEBRING — When you live in Florida and love the water, swimming in competitive events is never out of season. Former Sebring High swimmer Sean Spiegel won the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 20.91 seconds to qualify for the 2007 USA Short Course National Championships, which will be held next Wednesday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga. "That's quite an accomplishment for Sean," said Hurricanes coach Marvin Wolfe. "His goal is to qualify for the Olympic Trials next June and he is working hard toward that goal." ...more

SEBRING — The pool was more quiet than usual this week as the state-qualifying members of the Sebring swim team got their last laps in before the Class 2A state finals, which begin this morning at 9 a.m. Three individuals — junior Megan Wolfe in the 50 free, junior Bryan Kirsch in the 100-breaststroke and senior Shanaan Spiegel in the 100-backstroke — join the Wolfe-anchored 200-free relay team at the Central Florida YMCA Aquatic center in Orlando. That's a total of six Streaks representing Sebring at state, two more than coach Pat Caton had hoped for heading into regionals. ...more
