I am writing to voice my disgust about the cover of an advertising supplement included with the Nov.10 edition of Highlands Today. The cover shows a beautiful, joyous, young lady frolicking with the American flag announcing this retailer's Veterans Day sale. The message being: celebrate yet another holiday by gleefully shopping. The advertising copy also goes on to say that this is all part of "the magic of..." this company. They can keep their magic in as much as I plan to never set foot in one of their stores. To use Veterans Day to promote a wonderful time to have a sale is tasteless and disrespectful. Of course, I am absolutely certain that no one from that retailer, the ad agency, the media that distributes the circular will step up to the plate and admit to it being in bad taste. I could suggest that every veteran and their families boycott companies that have a flagrant disregard for the meaning of Veterans Day by using it for commercial self-promotion, but, those companies could care less unless it hurts their public image on a national scale. ...more

When FDR became president we were facing an economical condition much as we are today. He instituted a program that put millions of people back to work and helped us get out of the Great Depression. It was a work program that was aimed at building municipal buildings, fixing roads and building bridges. It worked then and could do the same today. The government has said that funding for these projects has already been allocated, so why hasn't it been done? So many people are out of work and so many are losing their homes. A great percentage of these people would gladly take this work to put food on their table and a roof over their heads. ...more

Rep. Tom Rooney, please reconsider your last opportunity to support reform in the upcoming final House vote. I have a friend who has unbearable back pain and has been given powerful narcotics but no other treatment for it because she is not old enough for Medicare, is unsure of what her work record is and so is not eligible for SSDI (disability,) was helped to get on Medicaid but since it is share of cost she can neither see a doctor in his office nor be admitted to a hospital for any effective length of time. She has a hole in her esophagus and has been told to just "watch it." She can hardly swallow anything and has somehow not qualified for tests for this situation. The only way she can be seen in a medical setting is in the ER where they have to treat her but they count the minutes before they send he back out to bear her pain alone. ...more
