Ken Wheeler, the director of solid waste, is into recycling, and Highlands County should be grateful about that. The county is likely to pick up more than $3 million in two grants – nearly one-third of the $10.5 million allocated – that Gov. Charlie Crist convinced the Legislature to award in local-government grants for innovative recycling projects. Highlands had lots of competition. A total of 140 cities and counties applied for the grants. After reviewing all 140 applications, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection picked the top 33 projects based on merit. ...more

TAMPA The world's largest ship for laying pipe in deep water - a visitor to the Port of Tampa this month - will be leaving this week, according to the Tampa Bay Shipbuilding & Repair Co. President Bush and Saudi leaders tangled Tuesday over the price of oil, with the president reminding this wealthy desert kingdom that U.S. purchases could fall if the American economy slipped because Saudis refused to commit his country to greater production to lower costs at the pump. ...more

This is in reference to Mr. Gulledge's letter of Dec.12 about Halliburton setting the price of oil. Mr. Gulledge is absolutely correct. Halliburton has nothing to do about pricing oil; they only pump the oil. Mr. Streeter is dead wrong about Halliburton setting the price of oil. I'm positive the Arabs wouldn't have an American company tell them what they can charge for oil. ...more

In response to Mr. Streeter's recent letter, I do not believe that Halliburton sets the price of oil. I believe the oil cartel does that. The reason that Halliburton pumps the oil is that they are the most qualified company in the Mideast to do so. If President Bush had not sent our troops to Iraq, Saddam would still be in power, raping and killing his own people, as he had done for many years. In addition, he would be ever more dangerous. I say "Good riddance!" ...more

I can't help but wonder why Sebring gas prices are $3.15-17 cents per gallon when you can go up to Albertsons or Avon Park and get it for $3.04 per gallon? I know when the politicians of the county want something they just add another penny or two onto the gas prices. Do they forget the price of oil has dropped and we're entitled to a drop in the pump prices? ...more

I thought that price gouging was supposed to be illegal? The price of oil is set by Halliburton, and the rest of the oil cartel, not by the Iraqis, or Saudi Arabia. So why hasn't our elected officials done anything to stop this fleecing of the people? Or are they all bought off by the oil cartel to look the other way? That's just another example of greed and corruption within free enterprise. This is why I am voting all incumbents out of office. Maybe some day our corrupt politicians will get the message that the people are fed up with their corrupt cronyism. ...more
