If we can tell anything about the presidential candidates from their campaign theme music, it may be this: They (or perhaps their aides) aren't paying much attention to the lyrics. If they were, they might change their tune. ...more

The recent dust-up between presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama over the role of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in passing the 1964 Civil Rights Act was unfortunate but timely, occurring as it did a few weeks before the nation honors the civil rights leader on this national holiday. ...more

We have been subjected to the ads of presidential candidates for almost a year. To think that this will continue, on an increased basis, for almost another year once the primary elections are over, is enough to drive one mad. Such as taking $1.96 trillion from the Social Security Fund since 1968. From 1968 to 1999, ( a 12-year period), they took $830.8 billion From 2000 to 2006, they have taken $1.14 trillion. ...more

Forget for a moment — if that's possible — all the presidential candidates offering us the world if we elect them to our country's highest office. Instead consider all the important offices here in Highlands County that will be decided in November. It's enough to get even a mild political junkie excited about who will run and who won't. All constitutional officers are up for re-election this campaign season. That means the sheriff, clerk of courts, tax assessor and tax collector are up for grabs. So is the school superintendent post, as well as county commission seats and school board positions. This is when we see some incredibly talented people take a risk and run for office. ...more
