I find it curious that record labels are suddenly concerned about compensation for performers (Our Opinion, Nov. 2)! For decades, labels have given pennies on the dollar to struggling artists who had little leverage at the bargaining table. Would it be too obvious to suggest that record labels open their own checkbooks and compensate their artists fairly before asking Congress to mandate a new fee on radio stations? Considering, of course, 50 percent of the new fee would conveniently go to the labels, not the artists. ...more

Avon Park is making history this week as the city will hold early voting for the first time for local offices. To mark the occasion, we hope that voters – and lots of them – will take advantage of the opportunity beginning Monday and continuing through Nov. 2. Voters can either go to Avon Park City Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, or request an absentee ballot through the Supervisor of Elections office. If requesting an absentee ballot, voters must do so by Wednesday to get it mailed to them, or they can have somebody pick it up for them if they ask for it afterward. ...more

Cambridge Christian School cheerleaders are looking for donations to send to troops overseas. Nonperishable foods and candy, reading material, playing cards, personal hygiene items and letters of thanks are among the goods the school wants to send.
