I am amazed at the number of people who write letters to the editor regarding the Lake Denton situation. The majority of the writers are critical and derogatory. We are called "selfish" for wanting to keep our lake safe and clean, and the area suitable for our children and grandchildren. We are not "the lucky few who can afford to own a home" on the lake, nor are we the "pampered and elite." The majority of us are two income middle class people trying to bring some resolution to a problem that has been going on for a long time, and has escalated to major proportions over the past three to four years. ...more

A tip of my hat to the learned Dale Gillis for his observation regarding my column of Nov. 8, in which I somewhat criticized our government trying to develop Iraq into a democratic form of government. He is right in that I have a negative view of religion and I ask just why I should not with all the scandals and religious zealots out there. Islam is just another religion, which has gone way too far in enforcing their fundamental beliefs. I failed to emphasize the need to establish some form of compromise between the Sunni zealots, Shiites, Jews and conservative Muslims so that that country can as our country does in accepting each other without war. ...more

I'm not prone to writing letters to the editor, unless I see or read something in the paper that really "cheeses me off." What has gotten my "knickers in a twist" this time is not something from the paper, but what our "County Mounties" are doing. Don't get me wrong, I highly respect our sheriff's deputies, it's what some of them have been doing by parking in a handicap spot that is upsetting. Once a week I have my hair done at a beauty salon on North Main Street in Lake Placid. Having a legitimate handicap sticker, it is most helpful for me to be able to park in a handicap zone. ...more

I don't have the opportunity to read your paper daily but when I do, I am always frustrated by the letters to the editor. They are always so negative. I believe we are blessed by God to have been born into a free nation where we can air our opinions, no matter what they may be. I was brought to tears this morning when I had the privilege of reading Mr. Wiley's letter and his the prognosis he received about his health. Thank you sir for sending accolades out to others, who probably don't hear them very often. Also for blessing me and reminding me what life is all about. It's so easy to get caught up in every day life that we forget our days are numbered. ...more

I am writing in response to two letters to the editor in the Highlands Today of Nov. 17. I agreed with both letters wholeheartedly. First, the letter from Don Streeter. Sir, I, too, think it is a good idea to vote all incumbents out of office. When our elected officials refuse to listen or acknowledge what is in the best interest of their constituents, we use our most powerful tool available. We "un-elect" them. Yes, this may be a situation of throwing the baby out with the bath water, in that the very few good elected officials will lose their positions of trust, but we, the voters, desperately need to clean house. ...more

In the Highlands Today front page story of Oct. 31, statements were made which strongly appear to be lies. Jim Brantley, spokesman for the U.S. Fleet Forces Command, said: 1. "Although this exercise involved bomb replicas, live bombs will be dropped in less than a year." This statement does not preclude that live bombs are not being dropped currently. 2. "The noise generated from live bombs shouldn't be much louder than operations out there now." This statement does not preclude that live bombs are not now being dropped. In fact, it enforces the fact that they are now being dropped! ...more

I read many letters to the editor wanting national health care. I, for one, will just say no to more taxes to pay for a government-run health care program. We do not need a 15 percent tax added on to everything such as hair cuts, clothes, motor vehicles, etc., like they have in Canada for substandard medical care. The letters say there are many children without medical insurance. This is bad, but only the parents of these children are to blame for bringing these children in to the world and expecting others to pay all of their expenses. The No. 1 way to reduce medical costs in the United States is to stop all free medical treatment for the 12-plus million illegal immigrants. ...more

I have thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Sergio Runningdeer's letters to the editor. It is too bad that more people don't think and act like this very spiritual man. It would be an honor to meet and talk with you. May God bless you Mr. Runningdeer. ...more
