Talk about icing on the cake. The Nature Coast girls' varsity soccer team hosted Central Thursday night, which also happened to be Senior Night. Imagine this most improbable of situations: Just under half of the people you know of, in this country, don't really care for you, or they dislike you in varying degrees and intensities, including hatred. About 10 percent of the rest of the people you know of think the sun rises and falls because of you, but most of them want something from you, which you probably can't give them, at which time they will fall into the remaining group that think you are "Okay," but they too want something from you. You have just graduated from an unheard of college with only a 2.5 GPA. These days, getting into a good college with –– and sometimes without –– scholarships is no mean task. Good schools have always been competitive but today's high school graduates have to arm wrestle for admission in a world where top graduating students muster a 6.0 GPA out of 4 and enough college credits to finish a bachelor's degree in two to three years. Some people may have reservations about dual enrollment and advanced placement courses but they have become a reality in our high schools. They also make financial sense for parents and students. AVON PARK — Heather Barnes is accustomed to wearing many hats. After all, the Avon Park senior is a star softball player, an outstanding diver and a top-notch student. Next year, however, Barnes will don a new hat altogether after signing a full scholarship on Thursday to play softball with the Stetson University Hatters. "It's an exciting time right now," Barnes said. "I got the paperwork last night and now its official. Now I can just concentrate on softball and beating Sebring.
