PLANT CITY - Perhaps next season Plant City and Strawberry Crest will play on the varsity football level, but for now this will have to do.
On Thursday the Raider junior varsity team will host the Chargers, who outside of their District 2A-5 games will be playing against JV teams in their premiere season. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Plant City's varsity squad will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday, a first-time meeting with Middleton High School, also at Raider Stadium.
Middleton had one of the more promising teams in the area just two seasons ago but lost several talented players to graduation and fell to 2-8 last year.
The Tigers had their open date last week so this will be their season debut. Plant City opened at East Bay.
Durant is set to host Brandon High at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
As for the other fall sports, golf and volleyball got under way last week, with the swimming season's first major event Saturday. The annual Bobby Hicks City Relays will take place across from Robinson High School; the Raiders, Cougars and Chargers swim teams will all be in attendance.
Last to get started is cross country. The East Hillsborough Invitational starts at 6 p.m. Sept. 15 at Newsome High School. The girls race will be followed 30 minutes later by the boys event.
