Teacher readies local couples for charity event's dance floor

PLANT CITY - Fifth generation Floridian Susan Staton, a certified dance instructor for 15 years, has prepared 10 local couples who had never danced before to showcase their talents at a 6:30 p.m. Nov. 6 fundraiser, Dancing With the Locals, at the Red Rose Ballroom. Noon Rotary has tapped Staton's talent for the past two years for this event.

Staton, who began dancing at age 3 and has been teaching ballroom and Latin dance at the Red Rose Inn and Suites for four years, also teaches a class from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays at the Red Rose. Assistant city manager featured at banquet

Assistant City Manager Greg Horwedel spoke on communities and city governments working together to preserve historical landmarks at the East Hillsborough Historical Society's 35th annual banquet.

Special guests at the Oct. 13 dinner included county Commissioner Al Higginbotham and his wife, Devon, and retired Plant City High Principal James "Sonny" Jones.

The society's 35th annual Pioneer Heritage Day will be held Nov. 14 in conjunction with the 15th annual Children's Fun Festival, at the 1914 Plant City High Community Center, 605 N. Collins St.

Curtain to rise Nov. 6 at theater's new venue

Plant City Entertainment will present its first production next month at its new home, 101 N. Thomas St.

The community theater will stage "Love, Sex and the I.R.S." at 8 p.m. Nov. 6, 7, 13 and 14. There will also be a matinee at 2 p.m. Nov. 8.

The theater recently bought the building, a former auction house near the downtown post office, as its first permanent home.

Clint Shepherd will direct, with Dodie White assisting. Tickets are $10; $8 for seniors and students.

Local woman helps organize Saks event

Charleene Closshey of Plant City is co-chair for the Peace Couture Saks Fifth Avenue fundraiser, to be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at WestShore Plaza in Tampa. This will benefit The Spring of Tampa Bay and is in conclusion of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Admission is $50, or $75 for patron tickets.

Young professional packages are available, four for $100. All purchases from Saks made during the event will receive a 15 percent discount, with 5 percent of all proceeds donated back to The Spring.

Tampa restaurants will provide food and there will be live entertainment, as well as a local celebrity fashion show with models, including Miss Florida Rachael Todd, Wendy Ryan of ABC Action News and Olympic Gold Medalist Brooke Bennett.

Applebee's offers to treat the troops

On Nov. 11, Veterans Day, all Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants will honor U.S. veterans and active duty military members with a free meal. All guests with proof of current or former U.S. military service will enjoy a free entree from a selection of six signature favorites.

The offer will be available for dine-in guests. The Plant City location is at 1204 Townsgate Court, off Thonotosassa Road.

Knights breakfast set for Sunday

A monthly breakfast hosted by the St. Clement Catholic Church's Council Knights of Columbus will be Sunday in Cronin Hall. The meal will be available 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church, 1104 N. Alexander St.

Tickets prices are $6 for adults and $4 for children age 4 to 12.

Sunday worship schedule changes

Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2104 Mud Lake Road, has changed its Sunday worship schedule.

The two Sunday worship services are now combined into one service of worship at 9:30 a.m., followed by Christian education classes at 10:45 a.m.

Plant auction set at fairgrounds

Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association will hold the 2009 FNGLA Plant Auction at 1 p.m. Nov. 7 at the 60-acre Hillsborough County Fairgrounds, State Road 60 at Sydney-Washer Road.

The proceeds from the auction will benefit youth ornamental horticulture activities and scholarships.

Phil Vassar to play The Bull

Phil Vassar, award winning Nashville recording artist, will perform Nov. 13 at the Dallas Bull, 3322 U.S. 301 N., Tampa. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Vassar is gearing up for the release of his fifth studio album, "Traveling Circus," scheduled for release in November.

Employee group to meet at Outback

National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Strawberry Chapter 1224, will have its next meeting noon Nov. 5 at Outback Steakhouse, 1203 Townsgate Court, off Thonotosassa Road south of Interstate 4.

There will be a menu of two entrees, side dishes and salad for $9.95 plus tip and tax. This annual meeting will include the election of chapter officers and other chapter business. The featured speaker will be Diane Thompson, Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

There will be door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.

Magazine among league sponsors

Softball Magazine will be one of the sponsors of the fifth annual Plant City Future Stars Youth Softball League.

Registration runs through Dec. 21. The season begins Jan. 31.

Every player and coach will receive a free subscription to Softball Magazine for one year.
