Kids get their kicks

PLANT CITY - Winning has its perks in the NFL/Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick Competition.

The local competition was hosted Sept. 26 by the Plant City Recreation and Parks Department and Optimist Club of Plant City. The top participant in each age group advances to the sectional competition, which will be held Saturday at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training complex.

The top four from each age group there gets to advance to the team competition during a Bucs game at Raymond James Stadium.

Competitors were judged on one attempt of each - punt, pass and kick - for distance and accuracy. The top three from each age group were given awards in Plant City.

Here are the top three boys finishers in each group: 8- and 9-year-olds, Matthew Byars, Patrick Hicks and Angelo Sardegna; 10- and 11-year-olds, Chase Ricketts, J.J. Niekro and Ricky Ocanas; 12- and 13-year-olds, Hunter Shuff, Garrett Calloway and Chris Collins; and 14- and 15-year-olds, Jared Smith, Christian David Hoyle and Hassan Bailey.

In the 8- and 9-year-old girls category, the top three finishers were Kira Paskins, Lindsey Smith and Makenzie Jones. The other female winners were Taylor Edgemon, 10- and 11-year-olds; and Ashton Sparkman, 12- and 13-year-olds.
