ST. PETERSBURG - Plant City High School senior Kathleen Hencke has won the 2009 Tony Jannus Essay Contest.
She is scheduled to receive the award this morning in a ceremony launching today's Tony Jannus day activities commemorating the world's first scheduled airline flight, which Jannus flew between Tampa and St. Petersburg on Jan. 1, 1914.
Hencke's essay, "The History of Commercial Aviation," focuses on advancements in aviation and airline technology.
In May, U.S. Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, was named recipient of the annual Tony Jannus Award for contributions to commercial aviation.
Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation and previous Jannus Award winner Norman Mineta is scheduled to accept this year's award in Oberstar's honor at a dinner tonight at the Tampa Airport Marriott.
The congressman had said he was unable to attend today's events.
