Charter school has devoted leader

Shirley Sanchez, a Tampa native, has a straightforward philosophy on schools: They should be a safe and nurturing places.

A mother of three and grandmother of eight, Sanchez is principal of Shiloh Elementary and Middle Charter School, 905 W. Terrace Drive, Plant City.

In her eyes, every child is a star. She is not one to hide behind a desk, and throughout the day you will find her praising a child in the classroom or hallway.

Married 42 years to Lewis Sanchez, she has been in Hillsborough County education for 40 years, in administration as well as in the classroom.

"Children are to be loved, educated and disciplined," she says.

There are 462 students at the school and 23 teachers. The school will add eighth grade next year.

Because it is a charter school and charges no tuition, Shiloh depends on donations and community support for some things, such as physical education equipment and some curriculum materials.

Mark Jordon is founder of the school and chairman of the school's board.

The school will hold its biggest annual fundraiser, a walk-a-thon, on Saturday. Donations are appreciated and can be made at www.shilohstars.com or by calling (813) 707-1060.
