PLANT CITY - More than 500 students, parents and others were on hand April 16 as the Florida Strawberry Festival handed out scholarships and trophies at its annual livestock banquet.

The event honors youths who enter animals in livestock competitions, thanks sponsors and generally wraps up the festival, which ran Feb. 26 through March 8. The festival handed out scholarships worth a total of about $20,000 and 188 awards at the banquet, General Manager Paul Davis said. The festival has awarded 114 agriculture scholarships over the past eight years, he said.

"To me, that's what the Florida Strawberry Festival is all about," he said.

The scholarships included ones honoring the late festival directors Bill McClelland, Roy Parke and James L. Redman.

"They were pillars of the community and they meant so much to the festival and the community," Davis said.

The livestock scholarships are made possible through the festival's Purchase a Sign Program, where local businesses buy advertising space on the festival grounds. A record 23 students received a minimum of $500 scholarships each.
