PLANT CITY - Any conversation about the Plant City High flag football team likely begins with star quarterback Qwet Shaw.
But as talented as Shaw is, the Raiders' defensive unit is way up there, too.
Plant City, trying to make it back to the state finals, started its season last week with a 33-0 romp against Riverview. Shaw was up to her usual tricks, using an unmatchable blend of speed and arm strength to mystify the opponent.
But Raider coach Larry Langston was as impressed with the way Plant City played defensively.
"Qwet did her natural thing, but the defense only allowed Riverview past midfield twice. They are just intimidating," Langston said.
Shaw adds to the intimidation factor as the free safety on defense. Middle linebacker Collisha Walker has been "phenomenal," according to Langston, and Yasmine Honors made 10 stops in the backfield against Riverview.
Tekeyah Clark and Articia Bennett are other top players who return to the formidable defense.
Plant City is the favorite to win District 10, but Durant expects to challenge. The top four finishers in the District 10 standings make the district tournament.
The Raiders are at Durant, which it edged for the district title last year, on Monday.
"Mark that one down on the calendar," Langston said.
A great crowd of about 350 turned out at Raider Stadium for the Plant City opener.
Before their showdown with Durant, the Raiders are at King on Thursday, and Durant will be at Tampa Bay Tech.
