Plenty of graduates of the Hillsborough County school system have come back to coach in the area, but Brandon High graduate Ben Henderson has done it about as fast as humanly possible.
Just weeks after earning his business administration degree from Winthrop University, Henderson has landed the job of cross country coach at first-year school Strawberry Crest, Chargers athletic director Melvin Williams said Wednesday.
Henderson is a 2005 graduate of Brandon, where he was part of Eagles teams that made back-to-back appearances at the state cross country finals. At Winthrop, he was a four-year varsity runner, a member of the President's Honor Roll and, during his senior season, the team's captain.
At Strawberry Crest, Henderson said he is looking forward to returning to the county as a coach, particularly at a time where distance running appears to be on the upswing.
"The county has improved immensely the past few years," Henderson said. "You saw that this season in track, where Hillsborough County had the [boys] state champions in three classes for the 4x800 [meter relay].
Henderson, the son of Tampa Tribune and TBO.com sports columnist Joe Henderson, also said he relishes the idea of being the first coach of Strawberry Crest's first boys and girls cross country teams.
"Any time you can start something new and be the first team, that's exciting," he said.
