Watsons leaving Art Guild positions

PLANT CITY - After three years as president of the East Hillsborough Art Guild, Leo V. Watson Jr. has decided not to seek another term.

His wife, LouAnn, also is stepping down after three years as first vice president of the organization that promotes the arts in the area.

Due to added family responsibilities, the Watsons felt they are unable to continue in their leadership roles in the 68-member art guild.

"LouAnn and I need a break and a rest," he said.

The organization is looking for two of its members to step up to fill the offices for the guild's next season, which starts in September.

The husband-and-wife-team spent the past three years on a whirlwind pace.

Among other duties, they helped develop new venues and cultivated participation in such annual events as the Florida Strawberry Festival art show and the guild's Christmas Showing of Fine Art at Walden Lake. The couple also encouraged young area artists to get involved with the guild and advocated cooperation with other arts organizations in Plant City and greater Brandon.

The Watsons also helped guide the successful end-of-the-year art and plant sale held at the lakeside park in Walden Lake. The well-attended May 16 event offered orchids, vegetables and other plants for sale, as well as fine art.

For membership information, contact the East Hillsborough Art Guild, P.O. Box 3055, Plant City, FL 33564-3055, or e-mail Leo Watson at: lwatshonjr@ tampabay.rr.com.

The guild holds monthly meetings from September to May at the Woman's Club of Plant City, 1110 N. Wheeler St.

At a recent party, the guild thanked its outgoing officers and welcomed the board for 2009-10, including Karen Crumley, second vice president; Muriel Cook, treasurer; Terry McFarland, recording secretary; Nancy Driscoll, corresponding secretary; and Joyce Jordan, social chairperson.
