TAMPA - A 37-year-old Plant City man tried to kill his ex-girlfriend by stabbing her "numerous" times in the upper torso Monday, but she was treated and released hours later from Tampa General Hospital, Hillsborough County deputies say.
Deputies arrested Derek Hinton at 1:39 a.m. today at 2901 Cork Road.
He was been charged with attempted murder and kidnapping.
Deputies say Hinton's 31-year-old ex-girlfriend had tried to sever ties with him, but he continued calling and trying to remain part of her life. About 1 p.m. Monday, he kicked in the front door of her home, and a "very loud screaming match" began when he confronted her, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
"As he was leaving, she wert out behind him and continued to have words," Carter said. "At that time, he was armed with some sort of object and stabbed her numerous times."
Hinton was arrested at his home about 12 hours after the stabbing, and the knife used in the attack has not been recovered, Carter said.
The arrest wasn't Hinton's first run-in with law enforcement.
Two years ago, Hinton pleaded guilty to arson. Adjudication was withheld. Hinton had been arrested by Plant City police after investigators said he set a fire at his mobile home and caused $108,500 in damage, including to an adjacent home. No one was injured, and 13 firefighters extinguished the blaze in 39 minutes. Hinton's probation was slated to end in May 2011, according to the state Department of Corrections.
Hinton remains in Orient Road Jail following today's arrest. No bail has been set.
