PLANT CITY - Winter Haven police charged a 16-year-old boy in a shooting that left a 40-year-old Plant City man seriously wounded.

Dontavious Devon Nelson of Lake Wales was charged with attempted murder and armed burglary in the shooting of Tyrone D. Coffee, police said. The status of his case is unknown.

An arrest affidavit said Coffee was in a car in the 500 block of Fifth Street N.E. about 2 p.m. June 15 when someone opened the rear driver's side door and shot Coffee. The injured Coffee tried to drive away but hit a vehicle and a utility pole, the affidavit said. He was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Police Sgt. Brad Coleman said Monday that Coffee was on life support.

A passenger in the 1998 Lexus S300, Dwight Henderson, 44, of Plant City, told officers that Coffee told the gunman, "You can have it, you can have it," before he was shot, the affidavit said. Henderson was treated for minor injuries.
Detectives visited the area of the shooting and developed Nelson as a suspect, a release said.
