PLANT CITY Writer, performer and professional speaker Ersula Knox Odom this month will portray Mary McLeod Bethune, widely known in the 1950s as a civil rights activist, as well as founder of Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona.
The program will be presented by the East Hillsborough Historical Society in association with the Florida Humanities Council. The Celebrate Black History Month program will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 29 at the 1914 Plant City High School Community Center auditorium, 605 N. Collins St.
The program will feature stories about Bethune's life, including her thoughts on the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision, Brown v. Board of Education, which banned segregation in schools. The performance is free.
