PLANT CITY - Joyce and Ed Cook of Plant City are quite the beaming grandparents these days.
Jake Kennedy, a Lutz resident and grandson of the Cooks, was recently selected for the first Football University Youth All-American Bowl. The game took place Sunday at the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, and featured some of the country's top up-and-coming talent.
Kennedy, an eighth-grader, had a stellar season for the New Tampa Wildcats. One of his teammates, Chad Meier, was also selected for the All-American Bowl.
The inaugural game was modeled after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, featuring the nation's top high school players. It features an East vs. West format.
One of the notable scheduled participants was Ray Lewis III, son of the Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl linebacker.
The selection process was conducted by Football University's regional directors and scouts, who attend youth games across the country and meet with coaches to help determine who is nominated.
Kennedy, like all of the players selected, went through an interview process before being picked to play in the game. He was the top running back for New Tampa and also started at linebacker and is considered a rising star.
Jake, 14, is the son of Vicki and John M. Kennedy. He attends Liberty Middle School.
Football University is an organization that stages invitation-only camps for elite players. Former NFL players and coaches are brought in to help lead the camps.
