Thursday

Film Festival Kickoff

Join in the festivities for the launch of the third annual Gasparilla International Film Festival at 7:30 p.m. at Tampa Theatre, 711 N. Franklin St.

Opening night kicks off with "Nothing but the Truth," starring Kate Beckinsale, Matt Dillon, Angela Bassett and Alan Alda. A VIP reception will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with film screening and Q&A from 7:30 to 10 p.m. The festival also will present a lifetime achievement award to veteran actress Terry Moore.

Tickets are $35 for the VIP reception and screening or $10 for the screening only.

The festival runs from Thursday through March 7 at venues in Tampa and St. Petersburg.

Friday-Sunday

Swing Your Partner

Strawberry Square, 4401 Promenade Blvd., Plant City, will offer A2 and C2 levels of square dancing with Mike Jacobs from Friday through Sunday. Strawberry Square, a community for square-dance enthusiasts, also offers all levels of square and round dancing from Mainstream to C1.

Expo And Boat Show

Like your life in the Florida outdoors? Learn more when the 18th annual Tampa Tribune Outdoors Expo and Boat Show is held in Expo Hall and Sweetbay Entertainment Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The event will feature fishing and hunting gear, outdoor products, a children's fishing derby and more. There also will be demonstrations and seminars. Parking is $5 for cars and $10 for RVs and buses.

The fairgrounds are at 4800 U.S. 301 N., Tampa.

Visitors are asked to enter the fairgrounds at the U.S. 301 North entrance. Call (813) 259-8224 for information and ticket prices.

Saturday

Help For Veggie Gardens

The Hillsborough County Extension Office will host a workshop on vegetable gardening from 9 a.m. to noon at 5339 County Road 579, Seffner.

The event will feature the following topics: 9 a.m., vegetable gardening 101; 9:30 a.m., organic gardening techniques; 10 a.m., growing vegetables in containers; and 10:30 a.m., pest management, including demonstrations of gardening techniques.

Fiesta Day, Por Favor

Fiesta Day returns with Ybor City Flavor from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Ybor City's official heritage celebration includes an arts marketplace, international parade of flags, entertainment and free Spanish cuisine to the first 1,000 visitors.

Fiesta Day and the Ybor City Saturday Market also host Flan Fest in Centennial Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Join in a "flan-tastic" day with flan baking and flan tasting contests.

Have A Taste For Wild Game?

You can't beat the price at the Countryside Baptist Church's Wild Game Cookout from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church at 13422 Sydney Road, Dover.

There is no charge to sample venison, hog, venison chili, fried wild turkey, squirrel, oysters and jambalaya. In addition, there will be archery demonstrations, a mount judging for game and fish and drawings for door prizes.

This event includes food, fun and fellowship, but the church asks guests to RSVP so it can have enough for everyone. Call the church at (813) 571-8200.

Sunday

Just Dance

Dance lessons and light refreshments will be part of a dance from 3 to 6 p.m. at Stardust Dance Center, 1405 S. Collins St., Plant City. The dance, sponsored by the Heart of Florida Chapter of USA Dance, will be for all levels of dancers.

For those who need some work on their dance moves, Frank Sliwa offers a short lesson at 3:30 p.m.

Cost is $6 for USA Dance members, $8 for nonmembers and $5 for minors.
