PLANT CITY - A banquet, parade and more were part of a festival celebrating black history.

The sixth annual Black Heritage Festival was staged Feb. 13-14 by Plant City Black Heritage Celebration Inc. "It's all a team effort," board member Sharon Moody said.

The festival opened with a banquet at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.

"The banquet was well attended with over 200 tickets sold," Moody said. "The entertainment and guest speakers were well prepared. I was especially proud to present awards to several Plant City residents who have been leaders in our community."

Lillie Mae Jackson, 100, was not in attendance but received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Eleanor West received the Heritage Award. Anna Reitz was the recipient of the Humanitarian Award, and Jim McDaniel received the Outstanding Citizen Award. Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and the Kiwanis Club of Plant City were also recognized.

Moody took the time to thank sponsors of the event.

"The city recreation department and the city of Plant City are an invaluable sponsor for the black heritage celebration," Moody said. Master of ceremonies Steve Wilson introduced the award winners and provided the benediction at the close of the banquet celebration.

On Feb. 14, the celebration continued with a parade, vendors, games, contests, entertainment and other activities.

"All in all I feel it was a successful celebration," Moody said. "All the vendors made money. All the visitors had a good time. And we all shared in the heritage of the black community in Plant City and the continued spirit that helps us to unite the change."

The celebration is presented each year as part of Black History Month.

Plant City Black Heritage Celebration is guided by board members including Moody, Wilson, Sam Miller, Dorothy Smith and James Washington, and other members of the organization, including Capree Smith, Dee Sears, Fran Nielsen, Nora Green, Marian Richardson, Carolyn Brown, Cassandra Manago and Cynthia Bailey.
