PLANT CITY - Spring is here - at least from a sports standpoint.
Last week, the high school sports schedule, though still wrapping up the winter sports, flipped to spring.
Tennis and baseball were scheduled to start Tuesday, and track and flag football will get going in March.
Both Plant City and Durant have hopes for a trip to the state tourney in softball, and their seasons started Feb. 11 against quality opponents. Durant, which made last year's 6A state semis at Plant City Stadium, lost to Newsome 6-2. The Wolves reached last year's 5A region final.
The Cougars are led by University of Florida-bound Kelsey Horton.
Although Durant lost ace pitcher Sara DeMuth, Plant City returns its star pitcher, senior Megan Still. She got off to a great start, blanking Sarasota Riverview 4-0 on Feb. 11 with 15 strikeouts. Taylor Storey had two hits and two RBIs.
Plant City will have two players signing scholarships next week, with Amanda Alba and Tara Thomas set to commit to Brevard Community College on Monday.
Plant City is at home for its next three games: Thursday vs. Brandon, Friday vs. Sarasota and Tuesday vs. Lakeland. Durant is at Riverview on Friday.
The Raider baseball team will also be playing at home against Sarasota on Friday and Lakeland on Tuesday. Durant's baseball team visits Riverview on Friday and then heads to Gaither for a Saturday afternoon game.
As for tennis, Durant's girls team looks like it will have its most prolific player ever. Kara Cecil has already committed to play for Ohio State University.
