PLANT CITY - A fifth-grader was bitten by snake during a fire drill this afternoon at Springhead Elementary School near Plant City.

But initial concerns that she had been bitten by a pygmy rattlesnake appear unwarranted. The girl's mother called the school's principal minutes ago to say it turns out the snake wasn't poisonous and was "a garden snake or something like that," Hillsborough County school district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said.

The girl was bitten about 1:30 p.m. today at the school, 3208 Nesmith Road, according to school district spokesman Steve Hegarty. A teacher and a custodian killed the snake.

The girl and the snake were taken to Tampa General Hospital. The snake was taken to see what type of antivenin might have been required.
