PLANT CITY - The Plant City Elks Lodge No. 1727, which has supported youth activities for many years through its annual Americanism Essay Contest, recently selected winners for this year's competition.
This year's topic was "What Freedom Means to Me." There were 16 entries from Plant City students. There were two divisions: Division 1 for fifth- and sixth-graders and Division 2 for seventh- and eighth-graders.
The lodge hosted a March 5 awards presentation dinner for the winners. For Division 1, Olivia Dwyer took first place, Jordon Lattimore took second, and Brianna Hostutler took third. Honorable mention was awarded to Elisabeth Seifter, Cynthia Tharrington, Shelby Baerwalde, Madison Manley, Jatziri Sandoval, Carley Smith, and Parker Suarez.
In Division 2, Michaela Knox took first place, Hannah Tredway took second and Lyndi Hopkins took third. Honorable mention was presented to Holly Turcich, Kristin Podsidd and Adriana Melendez.
Lodge Exalted Ruler Elect Jerry Yates emceed the ceremony. Others in attendance included Exalted Ruler Frank LaBarbera, District Americanism Chairman Tom Crews, Lodge Americanism Chairman Sharon Hammersla and other lodge members.
