PLANT CITY The city is exploring the possibility of selling the former site of the Plant City Family YMCA.
The YMCA last year terminated its lease on the property at 502 E. Young St. The city owns 4.3 acres at the location, bounded by Cherry Street to the north, Vermont Street to the east, Young Street to the south, and McDavid Street to the west.
The city might offer the land for a housing development. If an existing building on the site is removed, there is room for about 17 homes, Assistant City Manager Greg Horwedel said. If the building remains, there is space for about eight or nine homes, he said.
The city will get an appraisal before offering the land for sale.
City officials still have not ruled out leasing the property to a charity or other organization, Horwedel said.
At one time, the YMCA's main site was at the location, including a swimming pool. The YMCA continued to offer an after-school program after it moved most of its operations about seven years ago to more spacious quarters at 1507 YMCA Place, off Alexander Street.
The swimming pool, bathhouses and some other facilities at Young Street have been demolished.
