Workers Busy Building Schools

Beck, headquartered in Dallas with offices in Tampa, is the contractor for the schools that will be completed Aug. 1 near Interstate 4 and McIntosh Road

Construction of the nearly $59.6 million high school, now designated as UUU, began March 1. The school, with a capacity for 2,507 students, will pull its students from the Plant City, Durant and Armwood high schools' attendance boundaries. The high school will have only ninth, 10th and 11th grades in its first year, so no student has to transfer there in his or her senior year. The juniors will become the first graduating class the following year.

The elementary, designated J, will be south of the high school, across Newsome Road. Construction on the nearly $16.6 million elementary starts Nov. 1. The elementary will have a capacity for 956 students. It's not clear which schools the elementary will pull its students from, a district spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile, construction is a daily sight for commuters who pass the campus off I-4 east of McIntosh.

"There will be a lot of work getting done between now and next August," Beck project manager Ryan Toth said. "But everything is right on schedule and will be completed on time."
