PLANT CITY - Michol Spencer Hurst, a junior at Plant City High School, attended the 2008 Global Leadership Summit, sponsored by LeadAmerica, at American University in Washington, D.C., and Fordham University, New York City. The event is a college-accredited invitational leadership program for academically talented and promising young leaders from around the world.
"It was a real eye-opening experience," said Hurst, who hopes to attend next year's conference in Europe.
He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 14 in Plant City and is working on the rank of Eagle Scout. He is an honor student at his school.
Recently, he completed his Eagle Scout leadership project at South Florida Baptist Hospital and raised money to replace the televisions and DVD/VHS players in the pediatric unit. He also built a much-needed wall storage cabinet in the unit's children's activity room.
Bar Association Has New Officers
Circuit Judge Susan Sexton, who recently was assigned to the Plant City division, was the guest speaker at the Plant City Bar Association's Sept. 12 luncheon meeting at the Red Rose Inn & Suites.
New association officers for 2008-09 include Cliff Opp, president; Steve Sparkman, vice president; Lonnie Drayer, secretary; and Nancey Penner, treasurer.
GTE/Verizon Reunion Set For Oct. 4
Carol Conrad, reunion chairwoman, said the 11th annual GTE/Verizon Reunion will be held Oct. 4 at Edward Medard Park beginning at 9 a.m. Attendees should bring a covered dish and drinks.
Plates, cups, utensils and ice will be provided.
The park is off Turkey Creek Road south of State Road 60.

Hope Lutheran Names New Youth Intern
Katelyn Smith has been named director of Christian education and youth intern at Hope Lutheran Church, 2001 N. Park Road. She comes from Concordia University in Seward, Neb., where she graduated in May with a degree in theology.
Following a one-year internship at Hope, she will be certified as a director of Christian education within the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
She is the daughter of Craig and Karen Smith of Oxford, Mich.
During the coming year, Smith will be working under the mentoring leadership of Hope's pastor, the Rev. Dean Pfeffer.
"Katelyn brings an exciting approach to our educational and youth ministries," Pfeffer said. "There is no way that anyone, upon meeting her, can ever walk away and not feel the joy and excitement Katelyn brings to her ministry."
Lion's Club Readies For Golf Tourney
The Plant City Lion's Club's annual charity golf tournament is Oct. 10 at Walden Lake Golf and Country Club, 2001 Clubhouse Drive.
Sign-in is at 11:30 a.m., shotgun start is at 1 p.m., and an awards ceremony and dinner is at 6 p.m.

Republican Women To Host Fundraiser
Melane Byrd, president of the Plant City Federated Republican Women, has announced that the group will host a fine arts exhibit and silent art auction during its Oct. 4 "Celebrate Our Freedoms" open house.
Larry and Cathy Jimenez will open their home for the event from 5 until 8 p.m. Political candidates running for office will meet and greet everyone, and local vendors will be selling products for the holidays.
Fred Johnson, of Fred's Market Restaurants, will host five different food stations. Camellia Rose Tea Room will serve desserts, coffee and teas. A diverse group of artists has donated work.
All proceeds will benefit the Plant City United Food Bank and scholarships for local college-bound students.

Garden Club Offering Annual Tour
The annual Plant City Garden Club garden tour will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 and promises to be one of the best ever.
Plant City Photo Archives will take part in the tour as the Garden Club celebrates 60 years of service to the city.
Tickets are $12 per person, available the day of the tour at Union Station Welcome Center and Railroad Museum, 102 N. Palmer St. There also will be a plant sale there.
Advance tickets are available at All a Bloom, 1803 James L. Redman Parkway. The tour is a fundraiser for the proposed Veterans Memorial Park at Courier Field.

Motorcyclists' Ride For Haley House
The Riverview Detachment of the Marine Corps League will host its second annual Poker Run in support of Haley House on Saturday.
Haley House, staffed by volunteers, provides housing for families of those receiving treatment at the James A. Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa.
The ride will begin at the American Legion Post 148, 7240 U.S. 301 S. in Riverview. Registration is from 8 to 11 a.m., and kickstands will be up at 11:15.
The all-country-road bike ride will travel through Thonotosassa, Zephyrhills, Plant City and Ruskin. Awards will be given for best hand, second best hand and worst hand.
The event is open to the public.
