PLANT CITY - As the midpoint approaches in the local youth tackle football season, it has become apparent that the Plant City Dolphins' program might produce some future stars - even if it's the distant future.

Both the Dolphins Flyweights, the team for the youngest age group, 6- and 7-year-olds, and the Super Midgets, for 8- and 9-year-olds, got off to 3-0 starts with only one of the games being close at all.

The five Dolphins teams play each Saturday, with home games held at Otis M. Andrews Sports Complex off Park Road. Each Saturday the Flyweight game kicks off at 9 a.m. followed by Super Midgets at 10:45 a.m., Midgets at 12:30 p.m., Junior Varsity at 2:15 p.m. and Varsity at 4:15 p.m.

Plant City's Flyweights are off to a great start, with wins by scores of 26-6, 24-0 and 28-12 over divisional opponents.

"This little group I have is unbelievable," Dolphins head coach Armand Cotnoir said. "It's the best group of kids I've coached in nine years here. I mean these are 6-, 7-year-olds, and we are throwing the ball."

For the Super Midgets, who are coached by Rabul Cantu, the only moderately close game in their first three was a 22-18 defeat of Lakeland.

Plant City was originally scheduled for a road game this Saturday but will instead be at home against the East Bay Buccaneers.

The Dolphins play in the West Coast Youth Football Conference. There are eight teams split into two divisions, with Plant City joined by the Brandon Broncos, Lakeland Eagles and Wesley Chapel Cowboys in the National Division.

The regular season is 10 weeks long, with the division games comprising the first three and the last three weeks.

Plant City will host the second round of the playoffs this year on Nov. 15, and the Super Bowl will be Nov. 22 at Lakeland.
