Plant City Ready To Hit Field

Published: September 17, 2008

PLANT CITY - The Plant City Raiders hit their home field for the first time this season Friday when they host Riverview High.

Raider Stadium has been resodded, which caused Plant City's preseason game to be switched to Tampa Bay Tech. The new sod is now ready for its first game.

Also Friday, the Durant Cougars take on an eastern Hillsborough foe of their own when they head to Newsome.

For the Raiders and Cougars, this Friday's game tape inevitably will end up in their rival's hands. Riverview is a future district opponent of Durant's, and the Raiders will meet Newsome in district play next month.

Newsome made the playoffs two seasons ago with a rugged ground game and that has continued to be the Wolves' operating strategy. Conner Powers, who came on to lead Newsome in rushing as a freshman last season, will get the bulk of the carries.

Riverview has broken out of its run-only shell. But by no means are the Sharks lacking in the backfield, with Armwood transfer Ronnie Johnson posting a 164-yard game in Riverview's opener.

Quarterback Jarid Heffers, who won the starting job in preseason, threw the ball 20 times in the opener.

Both kickoffs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
