Diamonds & Denim Hospital Fundraiser Bids You Welcome

PLANT CITY - Sylvia Knox, chairwoman, and Lisa Galloway, vice chairwoman, of the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation's annual Diamonds & Denim gala report that this year's event will benefit the expansion and refurbishment of the hospital's obstetrics department.

The Sept. 25 event will feature dinner, dancing and a silent auction at the expo center at the Florida Strawberry Festival grounds, 2202 W. Reynolds St. It's not too late to get a ticket, $50 per person. Sponsorships start at $250.

Tryouts Next Week For Plant City Play

Who doesn't remember and love the Frank Capra film "It's a Wonderful Life"? Auditions for Plant City Entertainment's production of this great holiday-season show will be held at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Cornerstone Center, 315 N. Collins St.

April Smith, who will direct the play for the community theater group, said there are lots of characters from ages 8 to more than 60.

Professionals To Go To "Jail' For Charity

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is hoping to score big at the Walden Lake Golf and Country Club in Plant City. Local business professionals will volunteer an hour of their time from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday to go "behind bars" for this MDA fundraiser.

They will be picked up and taken to a mock jail at the club at 2001 Clubhouse Drive and must raise bail money in order to be released. After bail is raised, they will be escorted back to their place of business in a limousine.

All money raised from the lock-up will stay locally to provide services for patients in the Plant City area served by MDA. Nicholas Reaume, program coordinator for MDA, said more than 300 people in the area are served by the association's programs.

Spaghetti Dinner Benefits Mission Trip

A spaghetti dinner will be held Sept. 26 at First Baptist Church of Plant City, 503 N. Palmer St., to benefit a Peru mission trip. Lunch is carryout or delivery (for five or more) and dinner is dine-in or carryout.

Dinner tickets are available for a $5 donation and dessert is a $1 donation. Carryout lunch is from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and dinner is 4 to 6:30 p.m. Call (813) 752-4104 for tickets or information.

Yard Sale To Help Disabled Adults

Paula Benko, who teaches a job club class for adults with disabilities at James Ranch, part of the MacDonald Training Center, said the Plant City ranch has been working hard for several months preparing for a big yard sale that will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 26.

The ranch is at Cork and Thonotosassa roads.

This fundraiser will help with a job fair and other activities. The sale will include bikes, furniture, clothes, kitchen items, lamps, books and more.

Dancers, Get Ready To Salsa - And More

Area dance promoter Donna Garzone and Greg "DJ Muevete" of Salsa En St. Pete will host a Sept. 27 ballroom dance at the Stardust Dance Center, which has a 5,000-square-foot dance floor. Music starts at 8 p.m. with salsa dance lessons with DJ Muevete at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 per person, which includes music, dance lessons, beverages and snacks. Come prepared for tango, salsa, rumba, cha-cha, samba, and other dances.

Firefighters Get Propane Gas Tips

Members of Plant City Fire Rescue completed training on propane gas in Auguest.

About 37 firefighters and rescue personnel were involved in the training conducted by Gardner Box and his partner, Billy McPhillips. A fire captain said he was pleased with the attendance and response to the program, which was held at Box's training site, Country Side Propane on Turkey Creek Road.

Eat Fish And Help A Good Cause

Grand Knight Tom Salvato of St. Clement Council Knights of Columbus said the organization will host an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 26 at Cronin Hall at St. Clement Catholic Church, 1104 N. Alexander St.

Meals will be available for eat-in or carryout. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children younger than 12. They will be available after all of the church's weekend Masses or at the door. Beer and soda will be sold for an extra charge.

All proceeds will go to help the mentally challenged.
