PLANT CITY - Cole Cothren, a Walden Lake Elementary School first-grader, earned bragging rights this summer when he finished 40th in the 2008 U.S. Kids Golf World Championship, held July 23 through Aug. 3 in Pinehurst, N.C.

Cole competed in the 6 and younger division. He has been playing golf since he was 2. At age 3, he began lessons and a year later was competing in tournaments.

There were 34 countries competing, and each player had to qualify through local and regional tournaments.

His parents are Matthew and Tiffany Cothren of Plant City. His mother said Cole would love to play golf every day, but with a sister, Tayler, who plays soccer; a brother, Jacob, who is into tennis; and a new baby brother, Drew, he gets to the course on an average of twice a week.
