PLANT CITY - A recently condemned building that housed a shelter for at-risk women has been destroyed by fire.
A woman who was living in the condemned home at Penny's Angels, 4503 Airport Road, escaped with minor injuries, as did three cats and a dog.
The 1,600-square-foot home was operated by Penny Simmons, who used a grant to offer food, shelter and counseling for women in need.
The building was condemned by the city as unfit for human habitation July 25 and electrical service was disconnected Aug. 12.
A private well on the property was made unusable when power to the well pump was interrupted.
"The house was unsafe and condemned," said Lamar Kent, a code inspector for the city. "No one should have been in the home."
The Aug. 18 fire started about 9:30 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the home was filled with flames.
It is not known what caused the fire.
