Noteworthy items from the Aug. 25 Plant City Commission meeting include:

•City commissioners approved City Manager David Sollenberger's recommendation to commit $200,000 to secure a matching grant for the fourth phase of development of Ellis-Methvin Park near Cherry Street and Park Road.

The city funds will cover a matching grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection through the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program.

Phase 4 improvements are to include soccer fields, a concession/restroom building, paved trail, drainage, parking and landscaping.

•Commissioners approved a construction agreement with CSX Transportation for improvements to the railroad crossing at Woodrow Wilson Street.

The city will pay CSX $236,797 to perform the work and, under the terms of the cooperative funding agreement and grant program, receive $111,420 partial reimbursement from the state Department of Transportation.

Additionally, the city will repave the asphalt approaches to the crossing.

•Commissioners approved providing $53,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay toward public services at the nonprofit organization's two Plant City facilities.

The contribution to the clubs, designed to help at-risk youth, is possible through the federal Community Development Block Grant Program.

The local contribution last year was $60,000.

•Two Turkey Creek Road intersections may get traffic signals. The road's intersections at Sydney Road and at Airport Road have been identified as worthy of having signals installed, Hillsborough County Public Works has informed the city.

The county has hired HNTB Corp. to evaluate the two intersections.

•In his report, the city manager lauded Gary Sears for his recent appointment to the American Planning Association's Planning Officials Committee.

"Congratulations are certainly in order to Gary Sears for that fine accomplishment," Sollenberger said.

Sears is a longtime member of the Plant City Planning Board.
