Plant City Commission Honors One Of Its Own

PLANT CITY - The late Robert P. Brown was honored Oct. 13 by the Plant City Commission, the five-member board on which he served three years.

The commissioners adopted a memorial resolution to present to Brown's family.

The resolution outlines his service as a city commissioner, June 2005 to this past May, including the last year as vice mayor. During his term he also was the city's representative on the Hillsborough County Council of Governments, serving as its chairman from January 2006 to 2008.

"Among his accomplishments, Robert P. Brown served as an officer of the Sunshine State Federal Savings and Loan Association, president of the Plant City Kiwanis Club and chairman of the board of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce," states the resolution.

It cites "his dedicated service to this city and to the Plant City community" which he "served with outstanding leadership, vision and a spirit of excellence."

The resolution signed by commissioners goes on to state: "Through his loyalty, patriotism and service to this community, he was a timeless example of the highest standards of citizenship."

Before reading the resolution aloud, Mayor Rick Lot called Brown "an astute businessman" who made Plant City a priority. "He was a great leader in our community."

Brown was also remembered in the invocation by the Rev. Jack Roberts of Eastside Baptist Church at the start of the meeting.

At Brown's final commission meeting May 27, colleagues presented him with a plaque honoring him for his service. Brown was in the audience June 9, when Mike Sparkman took the oath of office for Brown's commission seat. Brown did not seek re-election.
