PLANT CITY Patriotic speeches by local youth will highlight the 23rd annual Veterans Day program by Hopewell Funeral Home.
The 10:30 a.m. Nov. 8 observance in the chapel of the funeral home, 6005 S. State Road 39, is open to all.
"It's a great program," open to all veterans, their families and others in the community, said Margie Willis of Hopewell Funeral Home.
Participants include the Plant City post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, music by the 45-member Springhead Elementary School choir, a special candle lighting ceremony honoring troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the playing of taps.
As has been a tradition for the past two decades, students from area schools — elementary through high school — will be the guest speakers, Willis said.
Authors of the patriotic speeches judged best by the individual schools will read their work at the observance.
"It teaches them an appreciation of what Veterans Day is all about," Willis said. Additionally, over the years, veterans at the ceremony have remarked that they have found the students' words much more moving than those of politicians and other traditional speakers, Willis said.
