PLANT CITY - Several parents in Samantha Snow's second-grade class at Shiloh Elementary Charter School decided that every classroom at the school should have a computer or two.
With that in mind, they donated the first two computers to Snow's class and are asking anyone who has an old computer gathering dust, even if it's a nonworking one, to donate it to the school as well.
One of Snow's homeroom dads, a computer whiz, will give the donated computers new "clean" hard drives and get them ready for learning software for elementary-level students.

'Diamonds And Denim' Raises $85,000
Jean Ann Weaver Davenport was among 600 guests who attended the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation fundraiser "Diamonds and Denim" and went home as winner of the 50-50 drawing.
She and the hospital each received $1,300.
Judy Martin, who heads the hospital foundation, said the annual gala brought in $85,000 to benefit the obstetrics and gynecology departments.
Church Youth To Hold Benefit Lunch, Auction
Hope Lutheran Church's youth ministry will hold a lunch and silent auction Sunday at the church fellowship hall, 2001 N. Park Road. The money raised will allow the youth to participate in retreats and mission trips.
The auction baskets will include tickets to sporting events and concerts, sports memorabilia, gift certificates, handmade crafts and more.
Items can be viewed beginning at 9 a.m., and bidding begins at 11:45 a.m. and ends at 12:45 p.m. Call Katelyn Smith at (813) 752-4622 for information.
In addition, the congregation will hold its 14th annual Turkey Supper at the church from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 2. Tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for children.
Navy Promotes Plant City Graduate
Daniel S. Taylor, a 2006 Plant City High graduate, has been promoted to petty officer third class in the Navy. He received his training in San Diego and graduated Aug. 8 from Sonar Tech School.
In November, he will serve on the USS John S. McCain, a destroyer named after the father and grandfather of the presidential candidate who were admirals in the Navy.
The destroyer will be deployed to Japan.
He is the son of Scott and Diane Taylor. He also has a sister, Stephanie.
Elections Supervisor's Son Here For Wedding
Buddy Johnson's son Steven was in Plant City for a visit while attending his cousin's wedding. Johnson is Hillsborough County supervisor of elections.
Caleb Johnson and Diana Harris tied the knot Oct. 4 at First Presbyterian Church in Lakeland.
Born and raised in Plant City, Steven Johnson just graduated from Cedarville University in Ohio with a degree in marketing.
Resident Graduates From Disney College
Amber Davis of Plant City joins an elite group of travel industry professionals who have attained knowledge of Disneyland, Walt Disney World and Disney Cruise Line. She graduated from the Disney College of Knowledge and is now a Disney specialist.
"The college taught me how to add more value to each Disney itinerary," Davis said.

Poppell Employee Wins Award Of Excellence
A distinguished service award of excellence has been awarded to Colleen J. Bennett of Poppell Insurance of Plant City.
The award is sponsored by Central Insurance School & Professional Career Institute and is given to a person who has excelled in the area of building a better tomorrow.
Bennett was nominated by colleague Kathy Orchard.
Community Yard Sale To Benefit Food Bank
PLANT CITY A community yard sale to benefit United Food Bank is set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 15 at Ferman of Plant City, 502 E. Park Road.
Dennis Hall, general manager of the dealership, said there will be live music and a moonwalk for the children. Items can be dropped off at Ferman before the event.

Another United Food Bank fundraiser, featuring celebrity chief Jon Ashton, will be Feb. 7 and sponsorships are being accepted.
Jeff Houck, Tampa Tribune food writer, will be the emcee.
The food bank at 712 E. Alsobrook St. is soon to kick off its annual community and school food drives.
"This year's food drive success will be more important than ever due to the state of the economy. Our client numbers have increased by 300 per month since January of this year," food bank Executive Director Kelleigh Klein said in an e-mail.

New Community Choir Welcomes Singers
Joe Mendolia is organizing a Plant City community choir to enrich the cultural experience of Plant City.
The group meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays at First United Methodist Church of Plant City, 303 N. Evers St.
The choir plans to perform a variety of musical styles including baroque, classical, jazz, pop and spirituals.

Entertainment, Lunch Part Of Health Fair
Jazz entertainment and a free lunch will be served at a community health fair for seniors and senior advocates from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 14 on the grounds of Sunset Heights United Methodist Church, 416 Walter Drive.
Local health services and 50 exhibitors will be on hand to provide free screenings and educational services. South Florida Baptist Hospital's wellness program will provide flu shots (a fee of $27 or a Medicare part B card is required for immunization).
Donors will be accepted by Florida Blood Services. Guests are requested to bring a non-perishable food donation for United Food Bank.

GOP Event Draws More Than 200
The Celebrate Our Freedom open house at the home of Larry and Cathy Jimenez was attended by more than 200 people. The event was sponsored by Federated Plant City Republican Women.
Kelleigh Klein, executive director of United Food Bank of Plant City, accepted a check from Carol Kurdell, a Hillsborough County school board member, after she successfully bid on a painting by Jossie Azorin from Plant City.
Azorin and her daughter, Silvia Azorin Dodson, co-chaired the event.
Tracy Byrd Coming To Dallas Bull
TAMPA - Coutnry singer Tracy Byrd will showcase his talents live Oct. 24 at the Dallas Bull, a nightclub that is part owned by Plant City developer Ed Verner.
Byrd is national spokesman for the Special Olympics International for the Country Music Association and has published a cookbook, but he is best-known as a songwriter and guitar-playing country singer.
Doors will open at 7 p.m., and admission is $9.95. The Dallas Bull is at 3322 U.S. 301 N., Tampa.
Salvation Army To Host Fall Bazaar
LAKELAND - Capt. Amy Lee invites the community to a fall bazaar sponsored by the Women's Ministry of the Salvation Army church.
The annual event is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 31 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Salvation Army, 2620 Kathleen Road, Lakeland.
There will be something for everyone, including food, books, jewelry, crafts, baked goods, collectibles, clothing and more.
