PLANT CITY Plant City commissioners recently joined their counterparts on other government bodies recognizing Oct. 5-11 as Mental Illness Awareness Week.
The city commission's proclamation signed Sept. 22 by Mayor Rick Lott acknowledges that serious mental illness affects one in four people annually, making it more common than cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
Scientific breakthroughs in understanding bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses are resulting in more effective treatments to allow patients to reclaim full, productive lives, the proclamation states.
