PLANT CITY - City Commissioner Bill Dodson, Plant City's longtime representative on the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, has been named chairman of the 40-member association of local governments.

Dodson is the first Plant City Commission representative to serve as chairman of the council, which is based in Pinellas Park. The council reviews plans for major developments in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee and Pasco counties.

Dodson, who is just completing a one-year term as vice chairman, was elected by fellow members at the council's Nov. 10 meeting. His term as chairman begins Dec. 8.

Dodson has been Plant City's representative on the planning council since his 2002 election to the five-member city commission.

"What I'm proud of is that in the 46 years the planning council has been in existence, we've never had a representative of Plant City selected as chairman," Dodson said at the Nov. 10 Plant City Commission meeting, when he announced his election.

Dodson served as Plant City's mayor in 2003-04. He drew no opposition in the April 8 municipal election and was automatically re-elected to a third three-year term as the Group 3 city commissioner.
