EDITOR'S NOTE: Deborah Flock's fifth-grade class at Jackson Elementary School in Plant City sent in the following letters to the editor indicating their concern with the water shortage facing our state today and in the future:
Water Is Valuable
Did you know that Georgia and Tennessee are running out of water? Do you think our state will be next?
I know if we don't start conserving water we will probably run out, too. I want to remind people that it is easy to use water wisely.
•Turn off the water while brushing teeth.
•Take shorter showers.
•Only run the dishwasher when it is full.
•Get low flow toilets.
•Turn off the hose when washing the car.
I want to ask everyone to conserve water every day. If we run out of water we won't have any to drink. We won't be able to do the things we want to do every day. Water is necessary for life. We need to understand that water is valuable.

Use Water Wisely
Georgia, Georgia, sweet Georgia has been on our minds because Lake Lanier, the water supply for much of Georgia, is going dry. We need to think about how we too could be in short supply of water in the future.
We need to conserve water, which means we need to use water wisely! It is up to each of us to take shorter showers, turn off water when not using it and practice all sorts of ways to save water.
I want to pass on another amazing fact. Each person in America uses about 140 gallons of water every day! That is a lot of water! We need to know that many other countries don't use even one-half of that amount per person.
When I grow up I want to have kids and I want them to have water. Water is necessary for life so we must keep water on our minds and use it wisely.

Make Water Last
We have to conserve water now! That means we must use water wisely. For example, don't let the water run while you wash a car or give the dog a bath.
Don't let water leaks go, fix them. A small leak can waste over 70 gallons of water in one week. Use only the water you need but take care not to waste it. If we continue to waste water we will be like Georgia, no water!
We only have a small amount of freshwater on this earth. Ninety-seven percent of the water is salty and only 1 percent is available for us to use. Conserve water so that we will have enough to last a long, long time.

Save Our Water Now
I may only be 10 years old but I know that we need to conserve water! I also know that if we don't we will be out of it just like Georgia. We need to conserve water by using it wisely. We need to think before we waste even a drop of water.
Some scientists say that in 10 years Florida will be in great need of water. This is because we don't save water, we waste it! We need to use the lessons we have been learning and make good choices when it comes to how we use water.
Instead of "SOS," we should have "SOW," Save Our Water ... Now!

Why Aren't Gas Taxes On Receipts?
After you fill up your gas tank with either gas or diesel fuel, do you take a good look at the gas receipt?
Have you ever noticed that there is no tax information on the gas receipt?
I recently made a purchase at Home Depot. The subtotal was $35.45 and the sales tax was $2.49 for a total of $37.94.
Is it too complicated for an oil companies to put a tax line on gas receipts at gas stations?
Is the tax line kept off the gas receipts deliberately by politicians to keep customers ill informed on gas taxes?
