Published: May 28, 2008

PLANT CITY Very quietly, a chapter in local history closed recently.
Myrle Henry retired as a pharmacist 47 years and four months after earning his degree from the University of Florida.
"I guess it was time," Henry said of his decision after filling prescriptions for generations of Plant City residents.
Henry, who turns 70 in August, was born in Jacksonville and moved to Plant City when he was 9. He got his pharmacy degree in 1961 and worked for other people for five years before establishing ownership in local drugstores.
At one time, he had three pharmacies, including downtown's Magnolia, which he operated for 34 years until he sold the business in 2000 to Kash n' Karry. He worked for Kash n' Karry, which later became Sweetbay Supermarket, at the 507 S. Wheeler St. location. His last day there was in mid-May.
Henry, who has always been active in the community, is not exactly sitting in a rocking chair.
He is staying busy as a board member at South Florida Baptist Hospital and Evangelical University and Seminary. He's also active with the Gideons and at First Baptist Church of Plant City and is working with a man who plans in October to revive the Florida Opry, a variety show that Henry staged for about 10 years.
Henry and his wife, Tomi, are avid Gator fans and will no doubt spend their share of time in Gainesville come football season.
