Spring Sports Stars Take A Bow

PLANT CITY - The Plant City High School Boosters Club honored the top spring sports athletes this week with an awards banquet at the school.

The program included the announcement of most valuable player for each sport.

Quet Shaw, the talented quarterback who guided the Plant City flag football team to the state finals, was the easy choice for the team's MVP. Other honors handed out in flag football went to Articia Bennett for defense, Dakota Baty for most improved and Yasmeen Honors, the hustle award.

Aaron Gerbasi, the ace pitcher for the Raider baseball team, was the MVP of that squad. Sophomore shortstop Kyle Madill won the best offense award, Austin Kern was named best defense, fellow senior Bobby Liess was most improved and catcher Brent Butler was named the team's Ironman. Ross Kip won the Rip Sewell Award.

Arielle Rollyson and Chase Evans were the MVP recipients in tennis. Rollyson was the girls team's No. 1 player all year, and Evans worked his way into the starting lineup.

Other girls tennis team awards: Kari Aime' and Lauren Plunk, most wins; Alexa McElveen, sportsmanship; Laura Beasley, most dedicated; and Rebecca Sperry, coach's award. For the boys team, Dustin Hinson was most improved, James Newsom received the most dedicated award, Max Girling was named Rookie of the Year and Drew Balliet received the coach's award.

For track, Chad Hansen and Jasmine Pope were named MVP. Both athletes qualified for the Class 4A state meet. Other trophies went to Brian Goodman, most valuable runner; Derek Joyner, most dedicated; Tim Joiner, most improved; and Justin Torbert, coach's award.

The Boosters Club banquet was held Tuesday.

Raider softball coach Heidi Kouveras was to hand out awards at a team party Thursday.

Kendall Dawson, the senior catcher who led the team in hitting, and pitcher Megan Still, were scheduled to be named co-MVP. Still was also to be honored as the best defensive player and outfielder Kayce Hart was to be awarded as top offensive player. Alix Hooker was to be named Rookie of the Year and Taylor Storey, most improved.
