PLANT CITY June 7 is the deadline for women's softball teams to register for a tournament celebrating Juneteenth.
The June 14 tournament being organized by Plant City Black Heritage Celebration Inc. will be at Snowden Park at Waller and Washington streets starting at 10 a.m.
Participants already registered for the event include local teams, plus others from Lakeland, Dade City, Haines City and other Central Florida communities, said one of the organizers, Sharon Moody.
"We did this two years ago," Moody said of the event. "Right now I think we have six, eight teams" registered. "I don't think we want to go over 10," she added. Trophies will be awarded to the winning team and runners-up.
The event will feature a disc jockey, gospel and rap music, food, beverages and vendors, including a representative of Red Bull energy drink. A radio station, The Beat, WBTP 95.7 FM, is also scheduled to participate, Moody said.
The entry fee is $20 per team.
For information, call Dee Sears, (863) 248-6761, or Moody, (813) 453-7134.
Juneteenth gatherings are traditionally held across the nation to commemorate June 19, 1865, when Union soldier arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce the end of the Civil War and the end of slavery.
