PLANT CITY Capt. Darrell Wilson, longtime member of the Plant City Police Department, was honored at Plant City Optimist Club's annual Respect for Law Banquet.
Club President Jack Holland and Respect for Law chairman Carl Hinson presented Wilson with a plaque at the May 5 banquet at the city parks and recreational conference room.
Born and raised in Bartow, Wilson is working toward his bachelor's degree in organizational management. A U.S. Army veteran, he joined the department in 1993 and was promoted to a special crimes unit detective in 1994. He was appointed captain of the criminal investigations unit in 2002 and captain of administrative services in 2006.
Wilson is a member of Masonic Lodge 206 who, in his spare time, enjoys outdoor activities, basketball and yard work.
The program in which 1,500 Optimist clubs participated last year is intended to inspire admiration of local law enforcement officials among young people. Wilson was recognized for his outstanding efforts with the police department and the community, Holland said.
"We believe it is important for children to grow up with a strong belief in abiding by the law, respecting law enforcement and doing what they can to maintain peace," Holland said.
The club is also a major supporter of local youth programs, including flag football, basketball and soccer.
