PLANT CITY - Local military veterans are planning their annual ceremony to honor the nation's war dead.
American Legion Post 26 will hold its Memorial Day service 11 a.m. May 26. The post is at 2207 W. Baker St., Plant City, near the Florida Strawberry Festival grounds.
The ceremony will include patriotic songs and a speech by state Rep. Rich Glorioso, who is a Plant City resident and a retired Air Force colonel.
In keeping with a longstanding tradition, the names of local veterans who have died over the last year will be read, and the lists will be burned.
Memorial Day honors the war dead and is "a very somber event," said Lee Craighead, an Air Force retiree who is the post's service officer.
Craighead said the ceremony is also a time to remember those soldiers who are "knee-deep in sand," and in harm's way.
The public is invited to the ceremony.
