Published: May 7, 2008

PLANT CITY - Sandra Raulerson Cameron has lived all her life in rural east Hillsborough County amid orange groves and strawberry fields. That serenity has given her an appreciation for the quiet, pastoral life.

On April 22, Hillsborough County honored her by dedicating the Sandra Raulerson Cameron Boardroom at the John F. Germany Public Library in Tampa.

Cameron graduated from Plant City High School and attended Stetson University, Florida Southern College and Hillsborough Community College. She earned degrees in secondary education, English and architectural design. As a third-generation citrus grower, she has a family-owned agricultural business in Plant City with her husband, Gary, who retired from Cork Elementary School after many years of teaching.

Their son, Michael, who is a financial adviser with Edward Jones, his wife, Terrie, and son Nicholas live in Plant City. Daughter Susan, a Florida Green Building certified designer with C. Ross General Contracting, lives in Tampa's Hyde Park.

Sandra Cameron has worked as an interim, full-time, nonprofessional librarian at Plant City's library; served as chairman twice on the Tampa-Hillsborough County Library Board; and helped organize the Friends of Bruton Memorial Library.

Libraries are not her only love. An award-winning artist, she paints land and seascapes, exhibiting in national and international miniature shows, and has won numerous awards. She is a member of the American League of Pen Women and the Miniature Art Society of Florida. She enjoys quilting and a beach house at Boca Grande.

Plant City Resident Bags Big Turkey

PLANT CITY - Andy Bender bagged a nearly 21-pound gobbler recently at his Oak Grove Camp in Quitman County, Ga., on the Arkansas Creek.

The gobbler had an 11-inch beard and 1 1/4 -inch spurs. Bender said the legs were a bit tough, but the rest was tender and delicious.

Bender and family own Gro-Mor Co. in Plant City.

Club Replaces Trees Lost In Storm

PLANT CITY - Members of the Plant City Woman's Club recently planted two drake elms at Union Station Welcome Center and Railroad Museum.

Jean Ann Eatman, chairman of the conservation committee, said the trees were planted in celebration of National Arbor Day and Federation Day on April 24. The trees replace ones lost during a hurricane.

Members gathered to plant the trees with the assistance of the Plant City Parks and Recreation Department. Gil Gott of Florida Tree Source provided assistance in the selection and purchase of the trees.

The General Federation of Women's Clubs was an important force in founding America's first national parks and supported the creation of the National Park Service.
