PLANT CITY - The Plant City Garden Club beautification award for January goes to Marley and Sherm Williams of 2707 Forest Club Drive.
The Williamses have artfully employed the design elements of simplicity and symmetry to achieve a pleasing look.
The circular driveway carves out an island area between the street and the house. A palm stands on the island at both entrances to the driveway and a large and graceful ligustrum is in the middle. That creates a line perpendicular to the street, and a hedge of Indian hawthorn follows the curve of the driveway on the other side of the island area.
At the left corner of the house, a crepe myrtle provides a vertical line with a procession of lower plantings consisting of roses, hibiscus and robillini continuing in front of the home, and another hedge of Indian hawthorn tying it all together, bordering the far side of the driveway.
The walkway and steps leading from the driveway to the front door are centered between two planted areas containing begonias, marigolds, gerbera daisies, petunias and pansies. The effect is much like a mini-English country garden, with its many varieties of plants and colors.
Off to the right of the gardens, there are peace lilies and ginger plants as well as a pair of heron statues that watch over the gardens while welcoming visitors on their way up to the front door.
