South Florida Baptist Hospital's Annual Golf Tournament Will Benefit Children In Community

PLANT CITY - Golfers are invited to tee up for South Florida Baptist Hospital's annual Children's Golf Classic. IKON Office Solutions is the signature sponsor. The tournament is April 18 at Walden Lake Golf and Country Club.

The event begins in the hospitality tent at 11 a.m. with check-in and lunch provided by Fred's Market Restaurant. A shotgun start for the four-person scramble will be at 12:30 p.m. Dinner and the awards ceremony will be at 6 p.m.

Registration fee for individual players is $125; a foursome is $500. Registration deadline is April 11, and space is limited to 288 golfers.

The fee includes lunch, access to the practice range, poolside steak dinner provided by Outback Steakhouse, door prizes, and contests for hole-in-one, closest to the pin, longest drive and putting.

Sponsorship opportunities are available, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Sponsors will receive recognition in event publications and advertising, and privileges at the tournament sponsor hospitality tent.

Proceeds from the tournament support children's services in the community. Plant City children and families will benefit from the hospital's pediatric health programs and screenings, Wellness on Wheels and other services.

This year's goal is $50,000.

Young Lakeland Artist Wins Best Of Show

PLANT CITY - Katie Morgan, a second-grader at R. Bruce Wagner Elementary School in Lakeland, won a grand award - best of show at Student Art Expo '08, sponsored by the GFWC Junior Woman's Club of Lakeland.

Katie, 7, is the daughter of Kim and Jody Morgan of Lakeland and granddaughter of Goo Mackiewitz of Brandon, who is the sales coordinator for the Plant City Courier & Tribune.

Katie's chalk drawing was the unanimous choice of the judges in the show, which was at Lakeland's Munn Park. Her art teacher at the school is Marcia Anderson.

Health Programs Coming Up At Library

PLANT CITY - Two special free programs are scheduled this month at Bruton Memorial Library, 302 McLendon St.

The Alzheimer's Association will present Maintain Your Brain: How to Live a Brain-Healthy Lifestyle Community Workshop from 2 to 3 p.m. March 19.

This will be an interactive workshop featuring nutritional and lifestyle advice, strategies to keep memory sharp, interactive exercises and activities, and take-home reading materials.

Weight Loss Through Hypnosis, a Free Seminar, a program led by Darryl Schumacher, will be from 7 to 8 p.m. March 27.

Schumacher is a certified hypnotist who will offer an alternative method to dieting and ending the cycle of dieting. Space is limited; registration is required. Call (813) 757-9215.

Safety ID Program Hosted By Dealer

PLANT CITY - A free digital fingerprint and photo safety program, Operation KidSafe, will be offered at Jarrett-Scott Ford from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 15.

A child's picture and fingerprints will be taken using high-tech devices. A printout of the data will be given to the parent.

No database or records of children will be maintained. The only record of the visit will go home with the parents for safekeeping.

Parents can use the printout to provide to law enforcement agencies during an investigation if the child is missing.

Church Collects 'Bear Mountain'

PLANT CITY The congregation of Hope Lutheran Church on Feb. 17 held its annual Teddy Bear Sunday, bringing teddy bears to be given within the Plant City community.

This year, more than 200 bears were donated. They are slated for the United Food Bank and Services of Plant City. At the event was Kelleigh Klein, food bank director, who thanked church members for their donations and continued monetary support throughout the year.
