Spaghetti And Bagpipes Combine For International Treat

Anyone who thinks Italy and Scotland don't have much in common needs to come out today when Plant City Entertainment hosts a spaghetti dinner with entertainment from the community theater's production of the Scotland-themed musical "Brigadoon."

The dinner will be served from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wesley Centre at Reynolds and Wheeler streets. The menu includes spaghetti, salad, bread, beverage and dessert. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for children and available at the door.

Singers, dancers and musicians, including bagpiper Greg Nicolosi, from "Brigadoon" will provide entertainment.

Medical Facility Plans Back-To-School Physicals

Although it seems summer vacation just began, it is not too early to begin thinking about returning to school.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2, free school physicals and immunizations will be offered at Walden Lake Medical Arts Center, 1601 W. Timberlane Drive in Plant City, just off South Alexander Street.

The free physicals are for children in kindergarten through grade 12 entering a Florida school for the first time. Each student must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and an immunization record is required for school-aged children.

No sports, Head Start or child care physicals will be given.

Chandler Graduates Magna Cum Laude
Matthew Chandler, valedictorian of Plant City High School's class of 2004, has continued his academic excellence.

He graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Florida and the USF Honors College, receiving a bachelor of science degree in chemistry.

He has been accepted to the University of Florida doctoral program to obtain a doctorate in chemistry. He plans to begin the program this fall.

He is the son of Lee and Suzanne Chandler of Plant City.

Second Summer Tennis Starts June 30

Registration is under way for the second session of the Plant City Tennis Summer Program and will continue through June 28. The program will run from June 30 to July 17.

Two classes are offered; one for children ages 4 to 7 and another for beginners, ages 8 to 18. Lessons also are available for intermediate and advanced juniors.

Classes for the younger children are from 8:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday. Cost is $25 for the three-week of session.

The beginners' lessons will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday. Cost is $50 for the three weeks.

Arts And Crafts Shows Begin In August

Plans are in the works for the city's downtown arts and crafts shows, slated for the fourth Saturday of each month from August through December.

Local charities and non-profit organizations will sell food, and artists and craftsmen from Plant City, Brandon and Polk and Pasco counties will be there.

The Plant City Downtown Merchants Association and East Hillsborough Art Guild are sponsoring the events.

Church Adds Houck For Hispanic Ministry

The Rev. Linford Houck has joined the staff of Hope Lutheran Church as pastor of Hispanic ministries. The community is invited to a special service of recognition for Houck at 9:15 a.m. June 29 at the church, 2001 N. Park Road.

Houck served as pastor of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Plant City, part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, before retiring in 1997.

Special speaker at the recognition service will be the Rev. Ed Trinklein of Lakeland, former Florida-Georgia District president of the Missouri Synod. Leading the service will be the Rev. Dean Pfeffer, Hope's pastor. Christine Mansell will direct the music.

A reception honoring Houck and his wife, Millie, will follow the service.
